hi I'm dr. Alec CA and today we're gonna
be talking about a very painful
complication many people suffer from
after dental extractions and that is dry
socket dry socket also known as alveolar
osteitis is a painful condition that can
happen following dental extractions it
occurs when the blood clot at the
extraction site fails to develop or
prematurely dislodges or dissolves
before healing under normal
circumstances a blood clot forms at the
extraction site this clot serves as a
protective barrier that covers the
underlying bone and nerve endings found
in the tooth socket the clot also
provides the foundation for the
generation of new bone and of soft
tissue exposure of the underlying bone
and nerves in the socket can result in
inflammation and intense pain not only
in the socket but also along the nerves
radiating to the side of the face if you
develop dry socket the pain usually
begins 24 to 72 hours following the
extraction dry socket is one of the most
common complications following dental
extractions including wisdom teeth
extraction surgeries signs and symptoms
of dry socket may include severe pain
after a tooth extraction that can
radiate exposed bone partial or total
loss of the blood clot at the extraction
site bad breath and/or a foul smell or
taste coming from your mouth
some pain and swelling is normal after
dental extractions however if it cannot
be controlled with over-the-counter pain
medications or prescription pain
medications your doctor has given you
you should see your dentist oral surgeon
causes the actual cause of dry socket is
the subject of much research some
possible causes include bacterial
contamination and/or infection of the
socket trauma at the surgical site from
a difficult extraction things to avoid
after dental extractions and factors
that can increase your risk of
developing dry socket include smoking
smoking is known to slow healing and
potentially contaminate the wound site
the act of smoking on a cigarette can
also dislodge the blood clot spitting
rinsing drinking through a straw 24 to
48 hours after the extraction can also
dislodge the blood clot continuously and
frequently replacing gauze
which pulls out blood clots prematurely
tooth or gum infections current
infections around the extraction site
increases the risk of dry socket avoid
strenuous activities for a day after the
extraction soft diet for at least a day
after the procedure gentle rinsing only
after 24 hours with warm saltwater
complications of dry socket dry socket
rarely results in infection or serious
complications however potential
complications may include delayed
healing of or infection in the socket or
progression to chronic bone infection
called osteomyelitis so I hope you liked
