What is a simple sentence?

hi everybody this is dr. Karen today I'm

going to answer the question

what is a simple sentence a simple

sentence is a group of words that has a

subject a verb and States a complete

thought let's look at an example mom

cooked dinner let's see if this is a

simple sentence first we have to decide

if there's a subject and there is this

is what or who is doing the action in

the sentence the subject in this

sentence is mom this group of words also

has a verb this is what the subject is

doing so the verb is cooked now we have

to decide if this group of words states

a complete thought because that means it

can stand alone as a sentence so because

we don't see any conjunctions at the

beginning or end of this group of words

we know that it's a completed thought

that can stand alone as a sentence so we

know that this is a simple sentence

because it has all of the pieces a

subject a verb and a complete thought

now sometimes a simple sentence can have

a compound subject that means that two

different people or things are doing the

action in the sentence so let's look at

another example mom and dad cooked

dinner let's see if this has all of the

parts of a simple sentence there are

actually two subjects mom and dad

there's one verb which is cooked in this

situation there are two people doing the

action this makes it a compound subject

in this sentence the subjects mom and

dad are linked together by the

coordinating conjunction and this is why

we call it a compound subject because

there's two or more

things or people doing the action

because the conjunction is connecting

the subjects this makes this group of

words a complete thought so

we can call it a complete sentence now

sometimes a simple sentence can have a

compound predicate that means that the

subject or subjects of the sentence are

doing two different actions so let's

look at an example dad cooked dinner and

cleaned the kitchen let's see if we have

all of the parts of a simple sentence we

have a subject which is dad but we

actually have two verbs which would be

cooked and cleaned in this sentence the

two verb phrases are linked together by

the coordinating conjunction and this is

what makes this sentence have a compound

predicate because the conjunction in

this sentence is connecting the verb

phrases this means it's a complete

thought so we know that this group of

words can stand alone as a sentence so

that makes it a simple sentence because

we have our subject our verb and it is a

complete thought now let's do one more

simple sentence this time the sentence

is going to have a compound subject and

a compound predicate mom and dad cooked

dinner and cleaned the kitchen let's

look at all of our parts of this

sentence we have a compound subject

because we have mom and dad we have two

verbs cooked and cleaned and those two

verb phrases cook dinner and clean the

kitchen are linked together so we also

have our ver

in our sentence so let's see if we have

all of the parts of a simple sentence do

we have a subject yes we have mom and

dad do we have a verb yes we have cooked

dinner and cleaned the kitchen so those

are our verb phrases and then finally do

we have a complete thought yes we do

because the conjunctions in this

sentence are linking parts of the

sentence together so the first time we

see and it's linking mom and dad

together to form that compound subject

and the second and that we see is

connecting the two verb phrases together

cooked dinner and cleaned the kitchen so

we know that this is a complete thought

that can stand alone as a complete

sentence let's review what is simple

sentences one more time a simple

sentence is a group of words that has a

subject a verb and States a complete
