Family discovers 'euthanized' dog still alive

come here kisses Zoe the boxer is ten

years old and very much alive oh you

didn't catch it but she came ever so

close to die so he didn't get hit by a

car or make some kind of miraculous

recovery tumor right here make no

mistake about it here Zoe was sick last

fall she started having seizures her

owner tani Coates believed the tumor was

slowly taking her life

this felt like a final stab like I just

won too many things I knew it was gonna

be what pushed my kids to their breaking

point I slowed with joy every night like

I said she's my best friend on November

29th tani asked her dad to do what she

could not take Zoe into Bay View Animal

Hospital in Farmington to be euthanized

six months later and tani thought her

family was ready for a new dog I knew we

wanted a boxer I knew a boxer would help

my son heal so she started looking

online and came across a rescue group

for boxers it was there in the photos

tani saw an image she will likely never

forget I see the boxer town of rescue

page and I'm like the proof that looks

like my dog and then I was like I'm

crazy but I clicked on it anyways and

zoom in and I'm like no that's my dog

no but it couldn't be could it Zoe had

been euthanized and Toddie had the

paperwork to prove it a receipt for two

hundred fifteen dollars for euthanasia

and cremation Zoe's medical record which

lists euthanasia and even a sympathy car

may you find comfort and recalling the

special love and joy that you shared was

Oh from the staff at the clinic so to

figure out how this happened we sat down

with dr. Mary smart from my interaction

with mr. Coates it seemed pretty obvious

to me that they didn't want the dog

she's the vet so he was brought in to

see and here's where things get a little

bit tricky dr. smart says she told

Tommy's father so he did not need to be

euthanized in my professional opinion

this was a dog that had years to live

and I didn't want to put the dog down I

was trying to save its life smart says

she discussed other options that could

save Zoe surgery medication or even do

nothing at all but let the dog live

did he seem open to any of your

suggestions no no he kept repeating that

he wanted to put the dog down complete

falsehood Donnie's father Larry Coates

tells a different story so when she says

he insisted I put her down no no no I

discussed other options no app fatica

Lee no she never said one word to me

while we may never know who is telling

the truth here we do know what happened

next dr. smart contacted a rescue group

who is willing to take Zoey she then

took the money for the euthanasia and

put it towards surgery to remove the

lump on the dog's back a picture of Zoey

and dr. smarts exam room showing up on

the rescue groups Facebook page the same

day the Coates family thought that she

was put to sleep why didn't you call the

family I screwed up I should have called

the family had I any inkling that they

might at all be interested in having the

dog back I for sure would have called

but given my conversation with mr.

Coates that just seemed very obvious to

me that they didn't want the dog it

breaks my heart because I just don't

understand why somebody would do this to

my family now the big question here did

the vet do the right thing

dr. smarts words she was trying to save

an animal's life for the answer t ears

eyes heart we went to dr. Drew Alan a

member of Utah's veterinary board at pet

is someone is legally classified as

someone's property so as veterinarians

were obligated to follow what we agree

to do with that quote property of that

that they bring in to us dr. Alan says

this is a legal and ethical issue he

says vets are often asked to euthanize

an animal and they don't want to so they

have a couple of choices here one

decline and send them to another vet or

come up with another solution

but once the pet owner pays for it dr.

Allen says the vet is obligated to do

and as much as we are in this profession

for our love of the animals we need to

make sure we're not putting just what we

think is best for the animal above the

owners and the humans involved in the

as well hey come here don't think in the

end the Coates family did get their dog

back I mean this is the moment when

jaxxed and finally got his hands on her

she just literally laid her head on his

shoulder it was just so sweet so happy

now making up for lost time time they

ironically have thanks to dr. smarts

choice if I had followed procedure if I

had followed protocol if I had done what

mr. Coates asked me they wouldn't have

their dog their dog would have been

euthanized and this family would be

without their dog
